Main types of leather

Calfskin
They are the most using leather in the world, and used for shoes, handbags, bags, furniture, car seat, belts, etc.  They are distinguished by the weight of leather, sex and age of cow.

Cow   Cow over two years old, its silver surface has fine texture.

Steer Adult cattle castrated in a few months after birth and fattened.  Thick and strong.

Bull  Bull over three years old for breeding.  Thick and rough texture.

Kip   Cattle from six months to two years old.  They have fine texture as compared with adult cattle.

Calf  Calf under about six months old, its silver surface has smooth and fine texture, elastic and small damages.

Sheepskin (Sheep)
They have many types.  Soft, light and thin.  They are used for shoes, bags, clothes, gloves, etc.

Goatskin (Kid)
Thin and strong.  Its silver surface is little rough and hard as compared with sheepskin.  They are used for shoes, bags, clothes, wallets, etc.

Pigskin(Pig)
They are only self-sufficient leather material in Japan.  Light, well-breathable and high wear resistance.  They are used for back of shoes and instep material of shoes.

Exotic Leather
Crocodile, lizard, ostrich, elephant, etc.
They are luxury material, and used for shoes, handbags, bags, belts, wallets, etc.

The main method for “tanning” hide

To “tan” means that “leather” having excellent durability and strength, and hard to rot, because of chemical treatment to animal’s raw skin.

Chrome tanning
Excellent flexibility, elasticity, heat-resistant and stainability

Tanning
Method for tanning using tannin extracted from plant. The feature is the occurrence of aging (the color become darker and the shiny is appeared) while using for long time.
